A Study on the oral health status, treatment needs, and oral health awareness of military personnel for the development of oral health policies



Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the oral health status, treatment needs, and oral health awareness of military personnel to aid the development of oral health polices. This survey was conducted by questionnaire and direct oral examination by one examiner. The questionnaire was given to 2,057 military personnel, and 2,094 military personnel were surveyed by direct oral examination. A multistage, stratified, random sampling method was used to select the participants.
1. The mean number of decayed, missing, or filled(DMF) permanent teeth per subject was 5.0; of which 1.9 was current dental caries, 0.2 was tooth loss from caries, and 2.9 was treated carious teeth.
2. The mean number of permanent teeth needing treatment in each subject was 1.97.
3. Of the examined subjects, 58.3% had dental calculus, and 5.4% had shallow periodontal pockets.
4. The mean reported tooth brushing frequency was 2.38 times per day.
5. 5.9% of the survey respondents reported that they had received a dental prophylaxis while in the military.
6. 76% of the survey respondents stated that they wanted to get a dental prophylaxis while in the military.
7. 3.3% of the survey respondents reported that they had received prosthetic dental treatment while in the military.
